EXPANSION PROJECT STARTS AT IBRAHIM NASIR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN THE MALDIVES

Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) ia celebrating the start of the expansion project at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.

The expansion programme, being carried out in collaboration with the the Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), will add a 3,400m runway, new 12,000 tons per annum capacity cargo complex and new fuel farm.

The fuel farm will have a storage capacity 45 million litres of Jet A1 fuel along with fuel hydrant system. 

Speaking at a special ceremony to mark the commencement of the work, MACL managing director, Adil Moosa, remarked that Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) would be a “brand new airport” once these developments are completed.  

Economic Development Minister, Mohamed Saeed, confirmed that it was government’s aim to transform INIA into a modern gateway.

Liu Qiang, the Charge d’Affaires from the Embassy of People’s Republic of China, was also in attendance at the ceremony and spoke about the growing relationship between his country and the Maldives.


BUCG chairman, Chen Daihua, promised that his comoany’s experience and knowledge in developing airport infrastructure ensured that INIA was in safe hands and would be transformed into a modern, efficient, new airport.

Guest of honour at the milestone event was the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
